How to Help

What is Mercury?
Mercury is a naturally occurring element, Hg, that is found in air, water and soil. Mercury is highly toxic to humans and wildlife. It accumulates in the tissues of fish and other organisms inhabiting mercury-contaminated waters and builds up in the tissues of organisms higher up the food chain, including humans.

The Problem.
Over 700 Million fluorescent light-bulbs containing mercury are disposed of every year in the United States. Less than 30% are recycled. The remaining amount of mercury makes its way into the environment after carelessly disposing of a fluorescent bulb.

So how can you help?
By taking a little extra time when disposing of fluorescent bulbs you can help make a difference. In addition to contacting your local government or recycling programs, you can also use the Mercury Disposal System. This system was designed to contain the fluorescent bulb during disposal and contain the mercury if breakage occurs.

The Mercury Disposal System uses a patented puncture resistant bag with a toxic mercury warning label printed on it's outside. The bag is also specially engineered to attract and collect mercury if bulb breakage occurs. The system will even retain the mercury contents if exposed to water.
